The Routes of La La Land - Los Angeles

Above is a detailed stained glass map that is based on the main streets and freeways of Los Angeles, from the Pacific Ocean to just past downtown. It was created four years before the LA Metro first opened in 1990, for the first solo exhibition of the Underground Cathedral, that was sponsored by the University of Southern California. The exhibition presented the very first of a series of digital artworks plotted by an architectural computer design system, some of them seen in the "Plotting the Routes" gallery of this site. Like the huge stained glass artwork of a Paris Metro Map on the main page of this site, this artwork was shipped to Barcelona for an exhibition associated with the 1992 Olympics that never occurred, after both artworks were lost at sea and arrived damaged. Both are now on display in my private Los Angeles gallery, after being marooned abroad for twenty-five years.

This gallery of digital art, that will never encounter such hazards, contains various images created around three decades later, all derived from the organic-like distortion of a futuristic map of the Los Angeles Metro, that has been under constant development.

Some of these images also consist of faux picture frames containing details of an old map of the long defunct Pacific Electric Railway, popularly known as the "Red Cars," which was once the world's largest electric railway system. The experience of having grown up in Los Angeles, as the last lines of the enormous commuter train system were dismantled, has everything to do with what has inspired this life-long artistic project, that has continually evolved since before it was widely known that a new metro system was soon to be undergoing its first stages of construction.

Some of the details of this historical map can be seen in close up images that are posted on the individual pages of some of these artworks.
